Supercritical CO2 Extraction

co2 carts on batteries

You’re on the hunt for a cart…

… but you want something different, something more. You walk into a dispensary near you to peek at their menu. They have distillate carts, which you’ve seen and enjoyed plenty of times before. But as you look further down the menu, you see they have full spectrum carts for the same price. Could be the “different and something more” you’re looking for, but you’re not sure, so you ask the budtender.

“Full spectrum, full body,” the budtender says as they tap the menu.

What is Extraction?

Cannabis plants contain numerous trichomes, or the houses in which the plant’s various compounds are stored. These compounds, such as terpenes and cannabinoids (THC and CBD), are what influence a strain’s effects – uplifting, giddy, relaxing, or sedative, for example. Extraction is the process of separating these trichomes from cannabis plant material. As a result, then, extraction also removes terpenes and cannabinoids, using a solvent to catalyze the separation.

Why CO2 Extraction?

supercritical CO2 extraction

Supercritical CO2 Extraction, then, is the process of applying enough pressure to CO2 gas, so that it turns into a liquid. This supercritical state binds with the goodies and draws them out from their homes (they go willingly, we promise), resulting in a crude oil of terpene and cannabinoid goodness.

Our pals over at HighTech Labs run the process for us. They’ve perfected the technology, so we trust them to get the most out of our material for not only our customers but for our plants, too. We choose CO2 because:

  • It is more efficient in extracting the naturally occurring compounds of our plants, attributing to a full spectrum experience;
  • It produces an unadulterated final product, ensuring our plants are fully represented in their unique effects;
  • It aligns with our values as a clean cannabis cultivator.

Full Spectrum, Full Body

You look at your budtender, and they’re smiling – it must be a good product, accompanied by high praise and recommendation. You inquire more about this “full spectrum, full body” experience because, well, you’re intrigued. They tell you a full spectrum experience means, when compared to consuming distillate, you’re getting more than just a THC isolate. You’re getting all the plant has to offer in terpenes and cannabinoids, which attribute to the overall experience. This, then, triggers more of your endocannabinoid system – the receptors cannabis compounds bind to – resulting in a more prolonged full-body high, rather than a rapid head-high.

Thus, in your hunt for a “something different, something more” kind of cart, your budtender is apt to recommend a Supercritical CO2 Extracted product. Not that there’s anything wrong with distillate, but for the cannabis connoisseurs, it’s just a more satisfying experience.

Try it for yourself!
